I thought we were going to be in full bake-sale mode this afternoon, but it turned out that’ll be next weekend rather than over the Memorial Day holiday. Since we would have been rushed for time to make and decorate both cupcakes and cookies, I had gone ahead and made the frosting for the cupcakes and baked the pan full of chewy caramel cookies with peanut butter chips. I knew my baking companion is very artistic and creative, so presented her some options to decorate the cookies.

She asked if she could write notes to each of the intended cookie recipients and took some time and care with each of several notes. As she began writing one of them, she asked me, “What rhymes with ‘red’?” I explained the simple way to find a rhyme using the alphabet and one syllable. We went through the process. Bed. Ced. Dead. Fed. Ged. Head. On it went until we got to “said” and she looked so pleased. Down went the pencil with all the drama of The Roots when the keyboardist plays accompaniment to Jimmy Fallon writing Thank You notes. When I read the note to neighbors who hasn’t yet picked up their cookies, I wasn’t sure of my teaching skill in this instance.

The note to her family with their plate full of cookies was meant to convey “Yay!”
The other sends love: “Roses are red. Violets are blue. I said. These cookies are for you.” It rhymes, just needs a slightly different meter when reading.
