What cookie takes a strong arm, a hammer and a freezer? This one. While the food processor will crush the Oreo Mint Cremes into sticky crumbs, it takes a strong arm to blend cream cheese into the crumbs, a hammer to smash the candy cane decoration and a freezer to chill the rolled balls of dough before coating with messy chocolate.
This year I found the Oreo cookies with mint filling, but it was not red as I’d expected. Instead the middles were green, just like last year’s Keebler’s Fudge Striped Cookies* used for the Christmas treats. (Last year’s art shot used again this year. Why not?)

The recipe and directions for these cookie balls is at that link. I discovered a shortcut that I hope to remember next year. It’s not necessary to chill the dough before rolling into balls if it’s been very well mixed such that the dough doesn’t show a bit of cookie crumb. Then it can be rolled into logs about 1″ in diameter and the logs sliced quickly into chunks for very easy rolling, then onto a parchment-lined cookie sheet and into the freezer for about 30-45 minutes before applying the melted chocolate.
