When you miss a friend’s birthday, make a Belated Cake

He wanted chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. There’s two layers.

As I wrote on my Instagram: My friend Dom’s birthday was on the 4th. I missed it but said I’d make him a cake for the next time I see him. What kind would he like? Chocolate. What kind of frosting? Chocolate. So tonight I made his Belated cake and a Spare because I’ll see him in the morning. He doesn’t know about the cake, but the event we are to attend suggests food is welcomed. That’s why I made two cakes. What if he doesn’t want to share his cake with this particular group but with other friends? Well, there’s a Spare, right?

Spare Cake. One layer. When three layers are made, two cakes means one is a Spare.
The beribboned 2-layer Belated Cake. Look at that fudge frosting.

If he decides to share with the morning group and the Spare comes back to my place, there’s a small crowd of people recovering from the football fails of both the Seattle Seahawks (who won their last game but lost out on their playoff chance) and my University of Washington Huskies, who lost the national championship to some midwest team nicknamed “Cheaters” and spectacular overthrows by our Heisman candidate and some lousy calls by the ref. Chocolate helps with recovery from these sad events for local fans.
