Our Family Home in Rural Poulsbo Has Sold

Lilacs in the yard every year

After the passing of my mother and the ensuing rental of the family home ended a few weeks ago, the house and acreage is to be sold. I created a new blog about it on another site, but the site owner floods posts with ads so I’ve decided to post it here and hope that prospective buyers might locate it with an address search or SEO tag.

The two-story log house and 2.86 acres had two addresses thanks to the Kitsap County Assessors name-changing when the largest part of the original 40 acres of property was sold. Mail could thus be received at the same house with either address. a realtor. A certified appraisal was completed in mid-June 2025. My brother has the adjacent 2.5 acres which he is selling separately with the same realtor.

The big log house built in 1963-1964 for a family of 8 on 40 acres of property in Poulsbo, had 5 bedrooms, 3 on the main floor and 2 in the daylight basement at that time. There are bathrooms on both floors, with tub and W/D area in the top floor bath and shower in the lower floor bath. There was originally a carpenter’s shop in part of the basement, a large recreation room, a storage room with shelves for home canning and a freezer, and an additional storage room under the stairs. The beautiful wood floors had a Swedish finish so they could be mopped, and they were.

There are beautiful fireplaces made of large chunks of granite with mica on both floors, although Mother had fire inset put in the upstairs fireplace. She textured the wooden mantle with a blowtorch! There’s a built-in bookcase and firewood cupboard next to that fireplace.

The original property, then at the end of a dead end road, had a horseshoe canyon with old timber and a creek running through it on the house side facing Poulsbo. The other side of the house has a hill down to the road. Many trips were made down it as we walked to the bus stop about half a mile distant. The hillside was also great for family snowplay in winter. The wraparound canyon with a stream is still there, but shared now with neighbors after the sale of some of the property. (The stream brings “Waterfront property” into the realtor’s ad.) It can be accessed carefully from the property walking into the canyon or by trudging through the whole thing starting at the bottom of the driveway hill and walking to the right. The boys loved it and the youngest was still climbing trees last summer looking for branches wrapped with honeysuckle; the vines grow into the branch and the wood is exquisite for carving. There are critters who love the stream, too.

Approximately 35 of the original 40 acres were sold, the road to all of them paved. Several large houses with 3-car garages were professionally built on those lots, making the area look manicured, like the houses along the edge of a golf course.

Our log house and separate covered carport with a side “shop” area for garden tools and such does not fit that pattern, although there are beautiful rhododendrons of several colors and lilacs surrounding the lawn as well as lush ferns, trees, and bushes The lawn area is very suitable for badminton, volleyball and croquet, as it was often used since it was built for family entertainment.

The log house has a wooden deck on three sides with a wheelchair and ADA accessible ramps leading up to the front door deck and to the other two entrances on the main floor. Hummingbirds love flowers and feeders hanging from the deck cover. Squirrels and chipmunks appreciate peanuts. One of my brothers planted herbs and grew tomatoes on the deck. Quail, pheasants, owls, pileated woodpeckers, blue jays, robins and finches provide calm, listening entertainment.

The daylight basement was converted to a one-bedroom apartment for my grandmother after the kids were all grown, removing the “shop” and one of the two bedrooms downstairs to make room for an open kitchen/dining area and living room with the bathroom, storage rooms and the rec room with the gorgeous granite rock fireplace still there. There are two entrances on the daylight basement floor. The property cannot be listed as a duplex because of zoning, but a college student or mother-in-law would probably love having the whole daylight basement. It is electrically wired for appliances such as stove, fridge and dishwasher since the original “shop” had a big DeWalt saw and other man toys in it, always with the scent of sawdust. There is an outdoor root cellar on the left side of the daylight basement doors.

The main floor was converted from three bedrooms to two bedrooms and an “office” which all have a full closet and windows. The kitchen window has a view of the lawn, yard, gardens (we had a large vegetable garden and some of the planted area is visible in the realtor’s photos.) Deer wander the canyon side of the property where there are berries and apples. They will also wander onto the deck if planted items there might be tasty.

The kitchen is perfect for family-size cooking and parties. There’s plenty of storage and we had a bookshelf on the floor right beside the fridge for all those cookbooks. Additional storage for items such as platters and party dishes is available at the end of the hall in a double-door cupboard, usually shared with linens and small, less-used appliances.

The well water is delicious!
